The frilled-neck lizard is native to the woodlands and savannas of northern Australia and southern New Guinea, best known for the large ruff of skin around its neck that normally lies folded flat against its body. When startled or threatened, the lizard opens its mouth wide and snaps this frill outward into a broad, colorful ring to make itself look larger and more intimidating to predators. If the display fails to deter a threat, the lizard often flees on its hind legs alone, running in a bipedal sprint to the nearest tree.
