The golden lion tamarin, also known as the golden lion marmoset, is a small New World monkey of the family Callitrichidae, endemic to the Atlantic coastal forests of Brazil's Rio de Janeiro state and classified as an endangered species. A 2022 to 2023 census estimated about 4,800 individuals living in its primary range in the non-coastal Sao Joao and Macae river basins, with smaller, uncounted numbers in limited coastal forest areas, alongside a captive population of roughly 490 individuals maintained across 150 zoos worldwide.
