The hamadryas baboon is a species of Old World monkey and the northernmost of all baboons, native to the Horn of Africa and the southwestern Arabian Peninsula, regions that offer it fewer natural predators than the central and southern African ranges of other baboon species. It was held sacred by the ancient Egyptians, who gave it roles in their religion, and is known alternatively as the sacred baboon for that reason.
