The house mouse is a small rodent with a pointed snout, large rounded ears and a long, nearly hairless tail, one of the most abundant species in its genus. Though a wild animal, it has thrived by living alongside humans to the point that populations near human habitation now far outnumber genuinely wild ones, and it has also been domesticated as the pet or fancy mouse and as the laboratory mouse, one of the most important model organisms in biology and medicine; its full reference genome was sequenced in 2002.
