Hyacinth Macaw

The hyacinth macaw is the largest flying parrot species in the world, native to central and eastern South America, especially the Pantanal region of Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay. It has vivid cobalt-blue plumage with a bright yellow ring around the eye and a yellow patch at the base of the lower mandible. It feeds mainly on the nuts of palm species such as acuri and bocaiuva, using its exceptionally powerful hooked bill to crack shells too tough for most other animals, and it nests mainly in the hollows of large, old trees.
