The immortal jellyfish is a tiny jellyfish found in temperate and tropical oceans worldwide, notable for an ability found in almost no other animal: after reaching sexual maturity, an injured or stressed individual can revert its cells back to an earlier polyp stage rather than dying, effectively restarting its life cycle. This process does not make individual jellyfish immortal in a practical sense, since they remain vulnerable to predation and disease, but it has made the species a significant subject of research into aging and cellular regeneration.
