A diverse cnidarian class whose life cycle, in most species, alternates between a colonial polyp stage and a free-swimming medusa stage, though many species have lost one stage or the other. Hydrozoa includes the freshwater Hydra used widely in developmental biology research, and the Portuguese man o' war, actually a colony of specialized individuals rather than a single organism.
