Cryptomeria is a monotypic genus of conifer in the cypress family Cupressaceae, containing the single species Cryptomeria japonica. It is considered endemic to Japan, where it is known as sugi, and is also called Japanese cedar or Japanese redwood in English. The tree has been extensively introduced and cultivated for wood production in places such as the Azores.
