Kangaroo rats are small, mostly nocturnal rodents of the genus Dipodomys, native to arid areas of western North America. Their common name comes from their bipedal, hopping form, which resembles the much larger kangaroo, though kangaroo rats and kangaroos developed this hopping mode of locomotion entirely independently, as have several other rodent lineages.
