The largemouth bass is a carnivorous, freshwater fish of the sunfish family native to the eastern and central United States, southeastern Canada and northern Mexico, and the largest member of the black bass group; a 2022 study concluded the species properly carries the scientific name Micropterus nigricans, with the closely related Florida bass now recognized separately as Micropterus salmoides. Prized by anglers for its fighting resistance when hooked, it is the official state fish of Georgia and Mississippi and the state freshwater fish of Florida and Alabama, but its popularity has led to introductions well beyond its native range, where it has become invasive and has driven the decline, displacement or extinction of native species through predation and competition.
