Micropterus

Micropterus is a genus of freshwater fish, family Centrarchidae, commonly called black bass, currently comprising 14 recognized species plus two undescribed species, native to North America east of the Rocky Mountains from the Hudson Bay basin in Canada to northeastern Mexico; several species, including the largemouth bass, have been introduced worldwide and are now cosmopolitan. Members show a dull-green base color with dark patterns on the sides and most reach 40 to 60 centimeters, though some largemouth bass strains grow to nearly a meter; the genus is highly valued as game fish, well known as strong fighters when hooked.
