Loa loa is a filarial nematode spread by biting flies that causes the disease loiasis, one of the neglected tropical diseases. Its name literally means worm worm, but it is commonly called the eye worm because it can be seen moving across the conjunctiva of the eye. It mainly inhabits the rain forests of West Africa and has native origins traced to Ethiopia.
