Mabee's salamander is a mole salamander of the Atlantic Coastal Plain of the southeastern United States, documented in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, with a total adult population estimated at at least 10,000. It lives in tupelo and cypress bottoms, pine forest, open fields, and lowland deciduous woods and swamps, burrowing near the acidic, fishless ponds and ephemeral sinkhole ponds up to 1.5 meters deep where it breeds. The IUCN lists it as least concern, noting that although its population is declining, the decline does not appear fast enough to justify a more threatened category; its main pressures are habitat degradation and the draining of the breeding ponds and temporary waters it needs.
