The marsh sandpiper is a small wader and a rather small shank that breeds in open grassy steppe and taiga wetlands stretching from easternmost Europe to the Russian Far East. Its genus name, Tringa, is a Neo-Latin name coined for the green sandpiper by Aldrovandus in 1599, drawn from the ancient Greek trungas, a thrush-sized, white-rumped, tail-bobbing wading bird mentioned by Aristotle, while its species name stagnatilis comes from the Latin stagnum, meaning swamp.
