Paramecium caudatum is a single-celled, ciliated protist roughly a third of a millimeter long, covered in short hair-like structures called cilia that it uses for both swimming and sweeping food particles toward its mouth. It is a very common species found in marine, brackish and fresh waters worldwide, and along with other members of its genus it has long served as a classic subject for studying single-celled organism biology.
