Passionflower, also called maypop, is a fast-growing climbing vine native to the southeastern United States, known for its intricate blossoms that combine rings of thread-like filaments with a raised central structure. Its name comes from early Spanish missionaries in South America, who saw in the flower's parts symbols of the Passion of Christ. The plant also produces an edible, egg-shaped fruit and has long been used in traditional herbal preparations intended to promote calm.
