The Philippine tarsier is a species of tarsier endemic to the Philippines, found in the southeastern part of the archipelago, particularly on the islands of Bohol, Samar and Leyte, with additional range on Maripipi, Siargao, Basilan and Dinagat islands. It belongs to the roughly 45-million-year-old family Tarsiidae, whose name derives from the animal's elongated tarsus, or ankle bone, and though formerly classified within the genus Tarsius, it has since been placed as the sole member of a new genus, Carlito, named for the conservationist Carlito Pizarras.
