Purple-fringed riccia, Ricciocarpos natans, is the only species in its genus, a floating liverwort of the family Ricciaceae whose dark green, heart- or Y-shaped thallus, up to a centimeter and a half across, floats freely on the surface of ponds and quiet water. It is distinguished from its close relatives in the genus Riccia by long, sword-shaped purple scales hanging from the underside of the floating thallus, and its species name, natans, Latin for swimming, describes its free-floating habit.
