Rhodospirillum rubrum is a Gram-negative bacterium about 0.8 to 1 micrometre in size, classified phylogenetically as a purple nonsulfur bacterium. It is a facultative anaerobe capable of a large range of metabolisms depending on its environment, using oxygen for aerobic respiration when available or alternative terminal electron acceptors such as dimethyl sulfoxide or trimethylamine oxide for anaerobic respiration when oxygen is absent.
