The ribbon seal is a medium-sized member of the true seal family Phocidae, seasonally bound to Arctic and Subarctic ice in the North Pacific, notably the Bering Sea and Sea of Okhotsk. It is readily identified by its striking coat pattern of two broad white bands and two white circles set against dark brown or black fur.
