The Ross seal is a true seal confined entirely to the pack ice of Antarctica and the only species in the genus Ommatophoca. First described during the 1841 Ross expedition, it is the smallest, least abundant and least studied of the Antarctic seals, notable for disproportionately large eyes, a short broad muzzle, unusually short fur, and complex trilling, siren-like vocalizations.
