Royal Penguin

The royal penguin is a crested penguin species that breeds almost exclusively on Macquarie Island and its nearby islets between Australia and Antarctica. It closely resembles the macaroni penguin, sharing the same orange-yellow crest feathers, but is distinguished by its mostly white face and chin rather than black. It nests in dense, tightly packed colonies on tussock-covered slopes near the coast, sometimes located far enough inland that adults must climb steep terrain to reach the sea. Because nearly its entire world population breeds on one island group, it is considered vulnerable to disturbance, introduced species, and changes in the surrounding ocean's food supply.
