Silene latifolia

Silene latifolia, commonly known as white campion, is a dioecious flowering plant in the family Caryophyllaceae, native to most of Europe, Western Asia and northern Africa. It is a herbaceous annual, occasionally biennial or short-lived perennial, growing 40 to 80 centimeters tall; young plants form basal rosettes of oval to lanceolate leaves before mature plants develop forked stems with opposite paired leaves. Its flowers are 2.5 to 3 centimeters across, with a distinctive inflated calyx and five white petals, each deeply notched, and the whole plant is densely hairy. The species has also become naturalized in North America, particularly the north-central and northeastern United States, believed to have arrived there via ship ballast.
