Caryophyllaceae

Caryophyllaceae, commonly known as the pink family or carnation family, is a family of flowering plants in the order Caryophyllales comprising approximately 105 genera and about 2,625 known species, found mainly in the Mediterranean region and neighboring parts of Europe and Asia, with relatively few species in the Southern Hemisphere. Its members are mostly herbaceous plants of temperate climates with opposite leaves and flowers usually bearing five petals and five sepals. The family includes pinks and carnations of the genus Dianthus, campions of the genus Silene, and the Antarctic pearlwort, one of only two flowering plants native to Antarctica.
