Snares Penguin

The Snares penguin is a crested penguin species that breeds only on the Snares Islands, a small group of islands south of New Zealand's South Island. It nests in dense colonies under the islands' coastal forest canopy of tree daisies, building nests from mud, twigs, and pebbles among the tree roots. Like other crested penguins, it has a bright yellow crest of feathers above each eye and a heavy reddish-brown bill. Because it breeds nowhere else and the Snares Islands are a protected nature reserve with no permanent human population, it has one of the more stable populations among crested penguins, though it remains restricted to a very limited breeding range.
