Soft tree fern, Dicksonia antarctica, is a tree fern of the family Dicksoniaceae native to southeastern Australia and Tasmania, one of the more cold-tolerant tree fern species, capable of surviving occasional frost and light snow. It grows a fibrous trunk composed of a dense mass of old root material rather than true woody tissue, can reach many meters in height over centuries of slow growth, and is widely cultivated as an ornamental in temperate gardens worldwide, including the United Kingdom, for its dramatic architectural form.
