Steppe Mammoth

The steppe mammoth, formally Mammuthus trogontherii, is an extinct species of mammoth that ranged across most of northern Eurasia during the Early and Middle Pleistocene, roughly 1.7 million to 200,000 years ago. It was one of the largest mammoth species and is thought to have been covered in fur, marking the mammoth lineage's initial adaptation to cold climates. It evolved in East Asia around 1.7 million years ago before migrating into North America roughly 1.3 million years ago and into Europe around 1 to 0.7 million years ago, and it was the ancestor of the woolly mammoth, the Columbian mammoth, and the dwarf Sardinian mammoth.
