Strawberry

The garden strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) is a hybrid flowering plant in the rose family, Rosaceae, cultivated worldwide for its fruit. It arose from a cross between Fragaria virginiana of eastern North America and Fragaria chiloensis from Chile, first made in Brittany, France, in the 1750s. The fruit is botanically an aggregate accessory fruit rather than a true berry, with each visible surface seed an achene containing the plants actual botanical fruit. Strawberries are valued for their aroma, bright red color and sweetness, and global production reached about 10.7 million tonnes in 2024, with China producing roughly 38 percent of the total.
