They have stems that branch by repeated forking and bear simple leaves called microphylls, reproducing by spores held in sporangia at the base of the leaves. Although living species are small, extinct tree sized relatives called Lepidodendrales formed vast Carboniferous forests that contributed heavily to coal deposits worldwide.FactsLycopodiopsidaConnectionsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsClassificationLiving or ExtinctWell-attestedYes 1Taxonomic RankWell-attestedClass 2LycopodiopsidaFilter Results9 entriesCommon GroupAllClubmosses (Lycopodiaceae) (5)Spikemosses (Selaginella) (4)HabitatAllAlpine (1)Bog (1)Desert (2)River (1)Temperate Coniferous Forest (1)Wetlands (1)Conservation StatusAllNot Evaluated (6)EcosystemAllChihuahuan Desert (2)Moorland (2)Svalbard (1)Everyday GroupAllClubmosses (Lycopodiaceae) (5)Spikemosses (Selaginella) (4)DietAllPhotosynthetic Autotroph (9)System (Realm)AllTerrestrial (9)Relationship to PeopleAllSource of Dye (1)Used in Traditional Medicine (5)Living or ExtinctAllYes (3)Where It LivesAllAfghanistan (1)Africa (2)Albania (1)Algeria (1)Angola (1)Austria (3)Bahamas (1)Bangladesh (1)Belarus (2)Belgium (3)Belize (1)Benin (1)Bolivia (3)Botswana (1)Bulgaria (3)Burundi (3)Cambodia (1)Cameroon (3)Canada (2)Central African Republic (1)Chad (1)Colombia (4)Comoros (3)Costa Rica (4)Cuba (1)Cyprus (1)Denmark (3)Dominican Republic (3)Ecuador (3)El Salvador (2)Equatorial Guinea (1)Eritrea (1)Eswatini (3)Ethiopia (3)Fiji (3)Finland (3)France (5)Gabon (1)Georgia (4)Germany (4)Ghana (1)Greece (1)Guatemala (1)Guinea (3)Guinea-Bissau (1)Guyana (3)Haiti (3)Honduras (1)Hungary (2)Iceland (2)Ireland (2)Italy (2)Japan (2)Kazakhstan (2)Kenya (2)Lesotho (2)Madagascar (2)Malawi (2)Manchuria (2)Mauritius (2)Mongolia (2)Mozambique (2)Myanmar (2)Netherlands (2)North America (5)Norway (1)Switzerland (1)United States (3)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 9Fir ClubmossLycopodiopsidaGroundcedarLycopodiopsidaKrauss's SpikemossLycopodiopsidaLycopodium ClavatumLycopodiopsidaResurrection PlantLycopodiopsidaRunning Club MossLycopodiopsidaSelaginella LepidophyllaLycopodiopsidaShining ClubmossLycopodiopsidaSpikemossLycopodiopsidaConnectionsParent Taxon OfFir Clubmoss, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Fir ClubmossGroundcedar, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: GroundcedarKrauss's Spikemoss, Species Well-attested Source GBIF Backbone Taxonomy: Selaginella kraussianaLycopodium Clavatum, Species Well-attested Source Lycopodium clavatum (Wikidata)tier 2Resurrection Plant, Species Well-attested Source GBIF Backbone Taxonomy: Selaginella lepidophyllaRunning Club Moss, Species Well-attested Source Lycopodium clavatum (Wikidata)tier 2Selaginella Lepidophylla, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Selaginella LepidophyllaShining Clubmoss, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Shining ClubmossSpikemoss, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: SpikemossSources1.
