They are the dominant seaweeds of cold, temperate, and polar waters in the Northern Hemisphere, commonly growing along rocky shorelines, with members of the order Fucales especially common intertidally. Some brown algae, such as the kelp genus Macrocystis of the order Laminariales, can grow to sixty meters and form underwater kelp forests rich in biodiversity, while Sargassum forms distinctive floating mats in the tropical Sargasso Sea; several brown algae, including kelps, are also used by humans as food.FactsPhaeophyceaeConnectionsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsClassificationLiving or ExtinctWell-attestedYes 1Taxonomic RankWell-attestedClass 2PhaeophyceaeFilter Results15 entriesCommon GroupAllKelps (Laminariales) (6)Other Brown Algae (3)Wracks and Sargassum (Fucales) (6)HabitatAllCoral Reef (1)Intertidal Zone (2)Kelp Forest (1)Marine (4)Conservation StatusAllNot Evaluated (11)EcosystemAllArctic Ocean (1)Kelp Forests (1)Sargasso Sea (1)Svalbard (1)Everyday GroupAllKelps (Laminariales) (6)Other Brown Algae (3)Wracks and Sargassum (Fucales) (6)DietAllPhotosynthetic Autotroph (15)System (Realm)AllFreshwater (1)Marine (15)Relationship to PeopleAllEaten or Drunk by People (3)Farmed or Commercially Raised (1)Hunted or Fished (1)Invasive or Introduced Species (2)Used in Traditional Medicine (2)Living or ExtinctAllYes (6)Where It LivesAllArgentina (1)Belgium (6)Brazil (1)China (2)Croatia (1)Denmark (9)Europe (1)France (4)Iceland (1)Ireland (1)Mexico (1)Netherlands (4)North America (1)Norway (11)Portugal (1)Romania (1)Russia (1)Sweden (9)Ukraine (1)United Kingdom (3)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 15BladderwrackPhaeophyceaeBull KelpPhaeophyceaeChorda filumPhaeophyceaeDesmarestia viridisPhaeophyceaeEctocarpus SiliculosusPhaeophyceaeFucus VesiculosusPhaeophyceaeGiant KelpPhaeophyceaeKnotted WrackPhaeophyceaeKombuPhaeophyceaeOarweedPhaeophyceaeRockweedPhaeophyceaeSargassumPhaeophyceaeSerrated WrackPhaeophyceaeSugar KelpPhaeophyceaeWakamePhaeophyceaeConnectionsParent Taxon OfBladderwrack, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: BladderwrackBull Kelp, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Bull KelpChorda filum, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Chorda filumDesmarestia viridis, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Desmarestia viridisEctocarpus Siliculosus, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Ectocarpus SiliculosusFucus Vesiculosus, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: BladderwrackGiant Kelp, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Giant KelpKnotted Wrack, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Knotted WrackAdditional Source Wikipedia: AscophyllumLeadtier 2Kombu, Species Well-attested Source GBIF Backbone Taxonomy: LaminariaceaeOarweed, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: OarweedRockweed, Species Well-attested Source GBIF Backbone Taxonomy: Ascophyllum nodosumSargassum, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: SargassumSerrated Wrack, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Serrated WrackSugar Kelp, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Sugar KelpWakame, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: WakameSources1.
