Home›Species›Taxonomy›AbiesTaxaAbiesPlant GeneraReference and ClassificationVerifiedAbies, commonly known as firs, is a genus of coniferous trees in the pine family Pinaceae comprising between roughly 48 and 65 extant species, found across mountainous regions of North and Central America, Eurasia, and North Africa; its closest living relative is the smaller East Asian genus Keteleeria. Firs are distinguished from other pine-family trees by needle-like leaves attached singly to the branch by a circular base, and by cones that stand upright on the branches like candles and disintegrate entirely at maturity rather than falling intact. Fir wood is widely used for paper pulp, plywood, and indoor construction, and several species, including the balsam fir and Nordmann fir, are grown commercially as Christmas trees, while others are cultivated ornamentally for their brightly coloured cones.FactsAbiesConnectionsIn the Other AtlasesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsClassificationLiving or ExtinctWell-attestedYes 1Taxonomic RankWell-attestedGenus 1AbiesFilter Results9 entriesCommon GroupAllPines (Pinaceae) (9)HabitatAllFreshwater Swamp Forest (1)Temperate Forest (3)Temperate Rainforest (1)Conservation StatusAllEndangered (1)Least Concern (8)EcosystemAllEastern Himalayas (1)Everyday GroupAllPines (Pinaceae) (9)DietAllPhotosynthetic Autotroph (9)System (Realm)AllTerrestrial (9)ThreatsAllClimate Change and Severe Weather (1)Relationship to PeopleAllFarmed or Commercially Raised (2)Invasive or Introduced Species (1)Source of Timber or Wood (3)Used in Traditional Medicine (3)Living or ExtinctAllYes (9)Where It LivesAllAlbania (1)Algeria (1)Austria (2)Belarus (1)Belgium (3)Bulgaria (2)Canada (1)Czechia (2)Denmark (6)Estonia (3)Finland (2)France (6)Germany (5)Greece (1)Hungary (2)Iceland (3)Iran (2)Ireland (4)Italy (3)Latvia (3)Lithuania (1)Mexico (1)Myanmar (2)Nepal (1)Netherlands (3)North America (5)Norway (6)Poland (1)Portugal (2)Romania (2)Slovakia (2)Spain (1)Sweden (6)Switzerland (2)Turkey (1)Ukraine (1)United Kingdom (5)United States (3)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 9Abies densaAbiesAbies forrestiiAbiesBalsam FirAbiesEuropean Silver FirAbiesFraser FirAbiesGrand FirAbiesNoble FirAbiesNordmann FirAbiesWhite FirAbiesConnectionsParent Taxon OfAbies densa, Species Well-attested Source Abies densa (Wikidata)tier 2Abies forrestii, Species Well-attested Source Abies forrestii (Wikidata)tier 2Balsam Fir, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Balsam FirEuropean Silver Fir, Species Well-attested Source Abies alba (Wikidata)tier 2Fraser Fir, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Fraser Firtier 2Grand Fir, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Grand Firtier 2Noble Fir, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Noble Firtier 2Nordmann Fir, Species Well-attested Source Abies nordmanniana (Wikidata)tier 2White Fir, Species Well-attested Source Abies concolor (Wikidata)tier 2In the Other AtlasesFound InNorth AmericaAlso in Geography Atlas: where this subject is found.Sources1.
