Tetrahymena thermophila is a free-living, single-celled ciliated protist that lives in fresh water and is the most extensively studied member of its genus, serving as a major model organism in molecular and cell biology. Research on it has helped uncover numerous genes and their functions, and study of its distinctive mating-type genetics has provided insight into the evolution of sexual reproduction systems. It was originally classified as a variety of the related species Tetrahymena pyriformis before being recognized as its own species in 1974.
