Toluca Stream Siredon

The Toluca stream siredon, also known as the Michoacan stream salamander, is a mole salamander endemic to the border area between the State of Mexico and Michoacan in central Mexico. It lives in about five known localities in slow moving forest streams shaded by pine and fir, remaining in the same river where it hatched for its entire life; its larvae feed heavily on ostracods, which make up roughly 90 percent of their diet, with nematodes taken occasionally. It is classified as endangered, threatened by stream loss and pollution and by introduced predatory fish, especially trout, and its narrow, ostracod dependent diet leaves it especially vulnerable to any disturbance of that food source.
