Tonkin snub-nosed monkey

The Tonkin snub nosed monkey is a slender bodied, arboreal Old World monkey endemic to northern Vietnam, and the rarest of the five snub nosed monkey species. It has black upperparts and creamy white underparts, a flattened face with a pink upturned nose, thickened pink lips, patches of blue skin around the eyes, and an orange throat patch in breeding males. Adults measure 51 to 65 centimeters in head and body length, with females weighing about 8 kilograms and males about 14 kilograms. It survives only in forest patches on limestone karst at elevations of 200 to 1,200 meters in the Vietnamese provinces of Tuyen Quang, Bac Kan, Ha Giang and Thai Nguyen, a dramatic contraction from its historical range, and fewer than 250 individuals were known to exist in 2008 though recent surveys suggest modest recovery in protected areas. The IUCN classifies it as Critically Endangered.
