Trichodesmium erythraeum is a species of marine cyanobacteria known for its prolific ability to fix nitrogen, supplying the ocean with a steady source of biologically available nitrogen while also cycling phosphorus. Its filamentous cells congregate into long colonies large enough to appear as sawdust-like particles to the naked eye and to color whole regions of ocean visible in satellite images. These blooms, typical of oligotrophic tropical and subtropical waters, are responsible for the famous coloration of the Red Sea.
