The blue-green bacteria: the only bacterial phylum capable of oxygen-producing photosynthesis, using the same core chemistry that chloroplasts in plants and algae are now known to have descended from. Cyanobacteria are credited with the Great Oxidation Event that filled Earth's early atmosphere with oxygen roughly two and a half billion years ago.
