Tussilago farfara

Tussilago farfara, known as coltsfoot, is a flowering plant in the tribe Senecioneae of the daisy family Asteraceae, native to Europe and parts of western and central Asia; its scientific name comes from the Latin tussis, meaning cough, and ago, to act upon, reflecting its traditional use in herbal cough remedies. It is the only currently recognized species in the genus Tussilago, though more than two dozen species once placed there have since been moved into other genera such as Petasites, Senecio and Farfugium. Modern research has found that the plant contains toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids that raise concerns for liver health, complicating its traditional herbal use.
