Venus Girdle

The Venus girdle is the largest known comb jelly, a ribbon-shaped, transparent animal that can grow up to a meter long while remaining only a few centimeters wide, drifting through the midwater of tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide. It is the sole species in its genus, moving through the water by combining muscular undulations with the beating of comb rows along its body, leading with one long edge as it swims. Internal canals running the length of its ribbon-like body glow with bioluminescence when disturbed, and it feeds on small crustaceans it gathers from the water column.
