The voodoo lily is a tuberous flowering plant native to the Himalayan foothills and parts of Africa, known for producing a single large, mottled purple-and-green flower structure before its leaves emerge. Like several of its relatives in the arum family, its bloom releases a strong odor of rotting meat to attract the flies and carrion beetles that pollinate it. The tuber is capable of flowering even without being planted in soil, drawing on stored energy alone, which has made it a popular curiosity in cultivation.
