Western Red Cedar is a large coniferous tree in the cypress family Cupressaceae and the largest species in the genus Thuja, growing up to 70 meters tall and 7 meters in diameter despite not being a true cedar. It is native to the Pacific Northwest of North America, where it favors a mild, rain-rich climate but also grows in drier areas with consistent moisture such as wet valley bottoms and mountain streamsides, tolerating enough shade to establish itself as a climax species in forest understories; some individual trees live for well over a thousand years.
