Agaricus bisporus, the cultivated mushroom, is a basidiomycete fungus native to grasslands in Eurasia and North America, cultivated in more than seventy countries and one of the most widely consumed mushrooms in the world. It passes through two colour states while immature, white and brown, known by various names including button, cremini, chestnut and portobello depending on stage and variety, and it typically grows in rich soil and compost, though a few poisonous species can resemble it in the wild.
