Agaricales is an order of fungi in the division Basidiomycota, established by Lucien Marcus Underwood in 1899. Although once thought to contain only gilled mushrooms, the order is now known to include non-gilled, coral-like and bracket forms as well, spanning more than 25,000 described species across 46 families that range from edible cultivated mushrooms to deadly poisonous ones. The oldest known fossil attributed to the order is the late Aptian species Gondwanagaricites magnificus, dating to the Cretaceous period.
