The wild boar is a wild pig native to much of Eurasia and North Africa, since introduced to the Americas and Oceania, and is now one of the most widespread mammals in the world. It probably originated in Southeast Asia during the Early Pleistocene, lives in matriarchal groups of related females and their young, and is the direct ancestor of most domestic pig breeds. Assessed as least concern by the IUCN because of its wide range and adaptability, it has nonetheless become invasive across much of its introduced range, and its hybrids with feral domestic pigs are considered a serious agricultural pest in the Americas and Australia.
