The wild horse is a species in the genus Equus that includes the modern domesticated horse and the endangered Przewalski's horse as subspecies. The European wild horse, or tarpan, went extinct in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century and was long treated as the wild horse's nominate subspecies, Equus ferus ferus, but more recent research has cast doubt on whether tarpans were genuinely wild animals rather than feral or hybrid horses.
