Wuchereria bancrofti is a filarial nematode spread by mosquitoes and the leading cause of lymphatic filariasis, a disease also caused by two related worms, Brugia malayi and Brugia timori. It is the most common of the three, infecting more than 120 million people across Central Africa, the Nile delta, South and Central America, tropical Asia, and the Pacific islands, and if left untreated the infection can progress to the disfiguring swelling associated with the disease.
