It is a large salamander with bright yellow coloring marked by prominent dark spots, almond shaped eyes, and a wide body, resembling the closely related blunt-headed salamander; its larvae share the adult coloring and grow long, thick external gills before some individuals complete metamorphosis. It is classified as endangered on the IUCN Red List, reflecting the pressure on its small range in Mexico.
