Florideophyceae

Florideophyceae is a class of red algae in the division Rhodophyta and the largest source of red algal diversity, distinguished by being exclusively multicellular, with pit connections between cells and, in most species, a triphasic life cycle. Members typically grow apically and appear vivid red or violet in life, a color that fades to green if the pigments dissolve in cold fresh water. Most Florideophyceae live in marine habitats worldwide, though three freshwater orders exist within the subclass Nemaliophycidae.
