Ginkgoopsida is a class of gymnosperms proposed by Sergei V. Meyen in 1984 to group Ginkgoales together with several extinct seed plant lineages he considered closely related on the basis of shared pollen, seed, cuticle, shoot, and leaf features. Other researchers have questioned whether the group is truly monophyletic, and some use the name instead as a narrower grouping containing only Ginkgoales, the lineage that includes the living Ginkgo biloba. The classification of this level of the gymnosperm tree remains unsettled among specialists, and this description presents the disputed picture rather than a single settled one.
