Anomaluridae

Anomaluridae, the anomalures or scaly tailed squirrels, is a family of gliding rodents found only in central Africa, representing one of several independent origins of gliding ability among mammals. Six living species split between two genera, the larger Anomalurus and the smaller Idiurus, share two rows of pointed scales on the underside of the tail and a gliding membrane between the front and hind legs whose supporting cartilage originates at the elbow rather than the wrist as in flying squirrels. The family's fossil record extends back to the late Eocene.
