Danionidae

Danionidae is a family of small, slender pelagic freshwater fish, order Cypriniformes, established by Bleeker in 1863 and commonly called danionins, comprising four subfamilies with roughly 41 genera in total, Chedrinae with 16, Rasborinae with 11, Danioninae with 13, and the single-genus Esominae, a family only recently split from the traditional Cyprinidae following phylogenetic research including work by Fang and colleagues in 2009. Members are primarily native to shallow freshwater ponds, streams, floodplains, marshes and paddies of South and Southeast Asia, with fewer species found in Africa. All danionins are egg scatterers that time their reproduction to the monsoon season in the wild, and the earliest known fossils of the group date to the Eocene of Sumatra, Indonesia, tentatively assigned to the genus Rasbora.
